Nanette Carter’s Artist’s Statement – 2016
The satisfaction from building something is not only experienced by the architect but also by the collage artist. The act of bringing pieces together to create a work of art has been a long time fascination of mine. This act dates back to early civilizations when artist would construct works of art from wood, sand, cowry shells, feathers, stones and other natural materials. Piece by piece placing parts together to make a completed structure is one of the oldest endeavors of human kind.
My concepts are intangible ideas that question and highlight the zeitgeist of our time. I’ve covered topics on war, injustice, technology and the lack of civility in our culture.
With the recent works I have taken an architectural term, “Cantilevered”, as my metaphor for life in the 21st Century. Our lives have become a balancing act of working 3 jobs, tending to elderly parents, children, social media, and the desire to keep up with all that is going on in the world. It has become a balancing act in the same way as a cantilevered structure implies. A structure that is supported only at one end, then bracing and holding up a myriad of elements.
Over the years I have been intrigued by the graceful horizontal format as it relates to landscape and nature. In the series “Earthly Winds“ I am creating lyrical lines that reflectplant life and the wind. This series explores movement in a playful context.
Since 1997 I have worked exclusively on frosted Mylar. Mylar is an archival surface. I work oil paint, oil sticks and pencils onto the surface with the desire to achieve the maximum luminosity, density and transparency.
