Woodblock Prints
In this show, Ralph Kiggell shows woodblock prints of towers and sites that have a concrete and mystical appeal to him. Towers draw people towards them and entice them to go up. Although there is nothing at the top but a view and a sense of height, somehow the journey and the climb have not been pointless. Pagodas, spires, columns and minarets mark the places where man has been and where he seeks to attain something greater than everyday existence.
At the same time, we build highrises and skyscrapers ever higher, send rockets, satellites and missiles into space to appease our materialist instincts and addiction to progress. Like Jack, who is compelled to go up the beanstalk, we are clever and stupid, practical and impractical, heeding the real or imaginary call of something up there.
These woodblock prints are printed on Japanese paper with water-based pigments. Kiggell studied woodblock printing in Japan for several years, before setting up a studio in Thailand, where he lives and works now.
Sacred Sites(神聖な場所） ：木版画
木版画作家Ralph Kiggellの今回の展覧会のモチーフは、神秘的な力で人を惹きつける塔や史跡である。
塔は人を惹き付け、またそこに上がる様に気持ちを誘う。塔の上は、そこから眺める景色以外は何もないが、旅行者などのそこに登ろうとする人にとっては、必ずしも無意味な場所でなく、むしろ魅惑的である。パゴダや、螺旋状のまたは、円柱状の塔は、かつて人間がそこに到達した高さの証のようなもので、そこは人が捜し求める日常の空間を遥かに越える何かが存在するところである。
ここ最近の我々は、空高く高層建築を建て、ロケットや衛星を宇宙に打ち上げることにより物質主義的な本能を満足させ、その絶え間ない進歩に病みつきになっている。まめの木に登らされたジャックのように、人間は空の上に現実的な様相と想像空間の両方を見ているため、我々は賢明であると同時に愚かであり、現実的でありながら非現実的である。
作品の木版画は、日本産の和紙に水彩顔料が使われている。Kiggellは、過去数年間日本で木版を学び、現在はタイのバンコクに移り住みアトリエを構えている。
